Canada Day fireworks will go ahead in Calgary this week despite calls from some Indigenous people to limit or cancel celebrations, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Monday.
He wants them to stand as a moment of reflection after First Nations in Canada recently confirmed the locations of unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools. Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan announced last week that as many as graves had been detected on the grounds of Marieval Residential School, which operated until Last month, the remains of children were found buried at a former residential school in Kamloops.
