Tundra Swan, Carburn Park, November 5, White-breasted Nuthatch, Carburn Park, November 5, White-tailed Deer, Carburn Park, November 5, The friends of Fish Creek are now taking registrations for the winter birding course, which runs from January 8, to the end of March. Register here. The canal is drained each year at the end of September, and the first couple of weeks of October are excellent for waterfowl and other birds feeding there.

On October 8, , Max Ortiz Aguilar went with his Sunday morning group and took some excellent photographs.

One of the star birds here in the fall is the Hooded Merganser. There are usually quite a few in the canal, and you can get good close looks.

Two male and four female-type female or immature Hooded Mergansers. The right-hand bird looks like a young male. The most common shorebird in the fall is the Greater Yellowlegs. Lessers are also seen, but in low numbers.

Killdeer and Spotted Sandpipers are usually around, and sometimes you find Dowitchers and even American Golden-Plovers. You can usually see a few hundred on this stretch of the canal.

American Wigeons are often seen. By this time the adult males are transitioning to breeding plumage, or have already done so. You can find quite a few songbird species in the treed areas especially along the golf course. The chickadees are rather tame. Mule Deer can be seen occasionally anywhere along this stretch of the river. Finally, the canal is a good place to find the scarce Rusty Blackbird in the fall. If you are interested in joining the Friends of Fish Creek birding courses, see this page.

The Winter session begins on January 8, , and they are now taking registrations. For the week of April , the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park birding course groups explored the Burnsmead area of Fish Creek Park, along the river just east of the park headquarters, near the wastewater treatment plant.

There are some ponds in this area, as well as a wooded area and the river itself. Max Ortiz Aguilar went with the group on April 16 and got these photos of some of the birds there. Ring-necked Pheasant male , Burnsmead, April 16, Canada Goose, possibly guarding a nest site, April 16, Common Mergansers female in front, male behind , April 16, This photo and the next shows the pinkish hue these birds have when they arrive here from their wintering grounds off the coast of Venezuela, where they feed on shrimp that contain red pigments.

The colour often fades by fall. House Finch male , April 16, Red-winged Blackbird male , April 16, For our last outing for our Friends of Fish Creek Winter Birding group, we headed to the Weaselhead and North Glenmore Park to see what winter birds remained, and if any spring migrants had shown up around the Glenmore Reservoir and in the Weaselhead itself.

While many of our winter birds had already left, a few die-hards were still around in good numbers, and we definitely were not disappointed with the numbers of spring birds we found all around the park. We headed down into the Weaselhead first thing, checking the feeders along the way. I had headed down before our group to fill some of the feeders, and managed to spot an overwintering American Goldfinch, but when the rest of our group headed down as a whole all of the feeders were completely devoid of activity.

Part of the reason for the vacancy is that now that the weather has turned, the birds were not quite as reliant on the feeders as insects had begun to hatch, and caches stored during the winter would provide plenty of food. We did have one little fellow who turned up, as always, at the tail end of the winter session.

I just love how much character these little mammals have, and how single-minded they can be when they first wake up. A little further down the path and across the bridge we found this male House Sparrow and his mate picking out some twigs, grass and leaves to make their nest for the coming season. Given where they were loafing about, they may have even been considering setting up shop in one of the Cliff Swallow nests on the bridge!

Before we turned around to head back up the hill, we stopped and checked the logs and information signs that have been used all winter as a feeding station, and sure enough we found some American Tree Sparrows singing away in the brush, and coming out to feed. These little sparrows have an amazing song, and are just as striking to look at.

We headed back up the hill and off to the east end of the Glenmore Reservoir to find our returning migrants, and were not disappointed on the first pond. A pair of American Wigeon were floating along the back end of the pond, well away from the Canada Geese and Mallards who were clearly set up on their nesting territories closer in.
